Eco friendly custom greeting cards November 13, 2009

SwirledChristmasTree

Christmas card from My good greetings

It is holiday time again and I need to make some fabulous Christmas cards!  To most, this is an easy task.  Take a family picture, send it to printing company and get cards.  Simple and painless.  For me, this task is not so simple.  Trying to find a company that  uses 100% recycled paper, and soy based ink is not so easy.  Low and behold I found one!!  I don’t know if I’m more excited about dressing my kid up in an outfit that will embarrass him when he is older or the printing company!  I have not tried them yet but their customer service is excellent and they answered all the questions I had within 24 hours.  So after our pictures are done next week off to My Good Greetings they go!

My good greeting also does birth announcements, party invites, moving announcements and pretty much anything that is festive and requires paper!

Please check them out!  If we want to save the world we have to support our green companies www.mygoodgreetings.com is where you want to go!

Happy Birthday Mom! November 12, 2009

Today is my mother’s birthday and the kid and I decided to make her a surprise dinner.  I was torn about what to make.  Of course I wanted to make something sophisticated that I’ve seen on Top Chef but my mom is country and likes cheese and likes fried food.  My goal is to make her happy on her day so it looks like the “get it girl” soul food dinner wins.  We had:

Thank God there were no condoms in the 70’s fried chicken

maybe I wouldn’t be such a basket case if you breastfed me mac & cheese

you’re a good mommy green beans

and death by triple suicide chocolate cake!

cake and green beans

cake and green beans!

mac & cheese and chicken

mac & cheese and fried chicken

Now that I have become a mom I try to make every moment that lends itself to a special opportunity, special.  I know the feeling that I get when my son does something for me even if it is just giving me a kiss.  If I can make my mom feel like that then I will do it time and time again.  She was surprised, she enjoyed her dinner, and she and her friends went to Kohl’s for the afterparty.  Small things please her hahaha!

Reason number 907 I use natural products! November 11, 2009

I do not know if you guys can really see what is going on in this picture!  There is a chunk of deodorant missing due to my kid eating it.  He loves to eat my deodorant.  I do not know why, but anytime he sees my purse he unzips it and goes straight for the deodorant.  Why is it in my purse you ask?  Well as good as it is, it is not secret.  I keep it in my purse just in case I’m out all day and I need to re-apply.

deodorant

apparently it's toddler food!

The first time he took a chunk out of my deodorant I was mortified!!  I snatched it from him in utter disgust.  Panicked I looked at the back for a list of ingredients and not bad.  Not edible but not bad.  I’m sure the aloe leaf juice helped the zinc, and sodium sterate go down while the chamomile helped expel the ascorbic acid and silica shells.  I wiped all of that out of his mouth and breathed a sigh of relief that even though deodorant was not meant to be digested it was natural so no toxins.

We have had the deodorant munch happen at least 3 times.  I now hang my purse on a hook on my bedroom door. Damn shame that I have to hide my deodorant!  First I have to lock the cabinets, the fridge, strap down the toilet seat, put balls on the door knobs that make it hard for me to open in the middle of the night when I have to tinkle.  I’m sure my son gets a kick out of this somehow.

Meatless Monday’s Sweet Potato Burritos November 9, 2009

sweet potato burrito

Sweet Potato Burrito!

This week I made some super yummy sweet potato burritos, I adapted the recipe from Addictive sweet potato burritos on allrecipes.com.  I changed a few things to make it a busy mom “to to” recipe.   They were the biggest hit ever with the kid!

ingredients:

flesh from one jumbo sweet potato smashed

1 Tablespoon of cumin

2 teaspoons of garlic salt

1 teaspoon of onion powder

1/2 teaspoon of chili powder

2 teaspoons of mustard

1 tablespoon of soy sauce

1 can of vegetarian refried beans

1 lb of mild white cheddar cheese shredded reserve one cup

6 10 inch tortillas

salsa to cover

Recipe:

heat refried beans just until warm

in a bowl mash spices and sweet potato

divide mixture between 6 tortillas, top with refried beans, add cheese

fold tortilla up burrito style and place on greased cookie sheet

bake in oven for 10-15 mins on 350 degrees

when they come out top them with cheese and warm salsa!

enjooooooooooy!

What would you do if they were your children? November 7, 2009

rihanna chris

rihanna and Chris Brown

So I just finished watching the Rihanna 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer.  I do have my personal feelings about the situation but that is not the point of this particular blog.  Both stars have been very publicly scrutinized for their action and people have been very critical of the situation without having all the facts.  I do not belive all the facts have been revealed and may never be. Let’s just take a minute to personalize the situation.

My question to you is what would you do if these were your children?  How do you talk to your daughter about domestic violence and how to get out of a situation or avoid one all together?  How do you talk to you son about what is acceptable behavior toward a woman?  How would you talk to your children to prevent this situation from happening?

I thought about it and the best advice I could offer my son is no one should hit anyone.  Period.  Should he find himself getting so angry that he wants to hit someone, he needs to leave the situation and go talk to someone or go do something constructive with his anger.  Go to the gym, mow the lawn, do something but do not touch anyone!!  If he finds himself in a situation where a woman is hitting him, I will tell him he needs to walk away.  If she is hitting him with an object he needs to try to restrain her, take the object and walk away.  I will tell him that under no circumstances is he to hit a woman, and he better not let a woman hit him either.  People do not hit people.

I do not know for certain what happened in that car with Rihanna and Chris Brown but I am sure that should either one of them removed themself from the situation until cooler heads prevailed, there would be no need for the 20/2o interview.

interested to hear your thoughts,

I was asleep and you left me!

Filed under: Uncategorized — shopturtlepie @ 2:21 am

Last night I fell asleep on the couch at around 11ish.  I had an exhausting day and I was pooped!  After I fixed dinner, I bathed the kid, and prepared him for bed.  The pile of dishes would have to wait until after Private Practice went off.  Two hours pasted, the kid was sleep, Private Practice was over and I had no energy.  I could not get off of the couch.  I turned to Chelsea Lately and fell asleep just as Khloe Kardashian and Lemar Odom came on. What a shame I was actually looking forward to more of the circus act.  I woke up to a banging on the door around 3am.  I jumped up and realized it was the kid banging on my bedroom door.  He is a little under the weather so I’ve allowed him to sleep in my bed until he gets better.  He must have woke up and realized I was no where in the room.  I’m amazed that he got out of the bed in the dark and made it all the way to the door.  Such a determined little bugger!  When I opened the door I felt so bad he had the saddest look on his face.  Kinda like a “how could you not be in the bed with me.  You know that I’m sick”  look.  I know he was secretly thinking “my grandmother would never do this to me, what kind of mother are you?”  Awwww my poor little bear.  When I picked him up he pat me on the back to let me know everything was ok now.

Needless to say the dishes didn’t get done, my blog didn’t get done, but my little bear was happy and that is all that mattered.

Muscleless Mommy! November 6, 2009

Funky Female Bodybuilders

After watching the Ciara LoveSexMagic video this morning I was inspired to do something about my “I look like I just had a baby” physique.  While still watching MTVjams I laid down on the floor to do some push ups.  Agya decided to climb on my back to add some weight.  No prob, I got this.  NOT!!  I did five push ups and could not do anymore.  Agya laughed and squealed with delight at the five that I did and kept bouncing on my back for me to do more.  I tried to explain to him that mommy doesn’t have any muscles so the ride is over.  He still bounced, oblivious to my pain, he wanted his ride.  At that point I began to actually feel bad.  What kind of mom am I that I can’t even play horsie with the kid because I do zero physical activity each day.  I remember seeing on Oprah I believe it was that you should do 30 minutes of physical activity each day.  That was my new goal.  If I could do 30 minutes each day then maybe in 2 months or so I could play tag with the kid and not be tired.  After all I don’t want to be the lame parent who is no fun to play with.  His dad can play an entire soccer match with him and still have enough energy for a basketball game.  I played soccer for all of 3 minutes before I was like um ok let me go bake some cookies or something I’m tired!

This afternoon I bundled up the kid and headed to the park.  If I was going to do my 30 minutes then I had to start today!  I managed to walk a mile in 20 minutes with no problem!  Yes, I said walk.  I can’t think of any circumstance that would make me run anything.  I don’t do running.  I will walk.  I am going to do my best to keep this up for the rest of the year. I need to get it together before Agya can formulate a sentence and say “my mommy sucks at playing because she gets tired”!!

30 minute challenge it is!
